Kshara Thailam – traditional Ayurvedic ear drops
Kottakkal Kshara Thailam, also written as Kshara Tailam, is a classical Ayurvedic medicated oil traditionally prepared for external use in the ears. The formulation combines sesame and mustard oils with herbal juices, aromatic roots, warming herbs, traditional salts and alkaline mineral preparations.
In traditional Ayurvedic practice, Kshara Thailam is used as part of Karnapoorana, the controlled application of medicated oil to the ear. Because ear pain, discharge, tinnitus and changes in hearing can have several different causes, this specialised preparation should only be used after the ear has been examined and under the direction of a qualified healthcare professional or Ayurvedic practitioner.
Main benefits
- Alleviates Ear-ache (Karnashula): Contains natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory ingredients like ginger (Shunti) and Devadaru to soothe sharp or dull pain in the ear canal.
- Manages Tinnitus (Karnanada): Formulated to help reduce persistent ringing, buzzing, or clicking sensations in the ears by balancing Vata dosha.
- Reduces Ear Infections & Discharge (Karnasrava): The antimicrobial and antiseptic properties of herbal alkalis (like Yavakshara and Hingu) help control bacterial/fungal infections and clear abnormal ear discharge.
- Relieves Itching & Irritation: Helps clear wax buildup, moisture trapped in the outer ear, or dryness causing persistent itching inside the ear canal.
- Supports Hearing Deficiencies: Used traditionally in Ayurvedic therapies to support ear function and manage mild conductive hearing loss caused by blockages or Kapha-Vata imbalances.
Key ingredients and their traditional actions

- Pippalimoola – Long Pepper Root: Long pepper root provides a warming and penetrating Ayurvedic quality.
- Mustha – Nutgrass: Nutgrass is an aromatic rhizome traditionally used in balancing Ayurvedic preparations.
- Saindhava and other salts: Rock salt, black salt, sea salt and related mineral salts form part of the classical recipe.
- Yavakshara and Sarjikakshara: These traditional alkaline substances have bacterial/fungal properties and also give Kshara Thailam its distinctive name.
How to use
- Use as directed by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
- Ear drop method (Karna Purana):
- warm the closed bottle gently in your hands, or in a bowl of warm water, until it reaches approximately body temperature.
- Do not heat the oil directly or make it hot.
- Using a pipette dropper, apply 3 to 4 drops of the warmed oil into the affected ear canal while lying on your side.
- Maintain the position for 5–10 minutes before letting any excess drain out naturally.
- Do not insert cotton buds or any other object into the ear canal. Do not share the bottle with another person.
Important precautions
- Never use if you have a ruptured ear drum (tympanic membrane perforation): Instilling oil into a perforated eardrum can lead to inner ear complications.
- Avoid in active bleeding or severe open wounds inside the ear.
- Always consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or ENT specialist before starting treatment to confirm your eardrum is intact.
