Nourishing Ayurvedic massage oil for Vata balance
Vaidyaratnam Ksheerabala Thailam is a classical Ayurvedic herbal massage oil prepared from a beautifully simple combination of Bala root, sesame oil and cow’s milk. Its name reflects two of its defining ingredients: Ksheera, meaning milk, and Bala, the strengthening Ayurvedic herb used in the preparation.
Traditionally associated with balancing Vata, Ksheerabala Thailam is particularly valued for gentle, nourishing massage where the body feels dry, stiff, tired or depleted. The sesame-oil and milk base gives the preparation a rich, soothing character, while Bala is traditionally regarded as a strengthening and restorative herb.

Key ingredients and their actions
- Bala: Bala is a highly regarded Ayurvedic herb whose name means “strength”. It is traditionally used in nourishing and Vata-balancing preparations and is particularly associated with maintaining strength and comfort in the muscles, joints and supporting tissues.
- Ksheera – Cow’s Milk: Milk forms an important part of this classical preparation. Ayurveda regards it as nourishing, soothing and strengthening, and its inclusion gives Ksheerabala Thailam a particularly gentle and restorative character.
- Tila Thaila – Sesame Oil: Sesame oil is one of the principal oils used in Ayurvedic massage. Its warming, unctuous and nourishing qualities make it particularly appropriate for balancing Vata while helping to soften and condition dry skin.
