Traditional Ayurvedic oil for muscles, joints & injury care
Vaidyaratnam Murivenna Thailam is a renowned classical Ayurvedic herbal oil traditionally used for external application following knocks, strains, sprains, bruising and other minor injuries. Prepared in a nourishing coconut-oil base, it combines Karanja, Aloe vera, Moringa, Indian coral tree, onion, betel leaf, Shatavari and other carefully selected botanical ingredients.
Murivenna Thailam has a long history of use in Kerala, where it is particularly valued in traditional care of the muscles, joints and soft tissues. Its cooling coconut-oil base and herbal ingredients make it suitable for gentle localised application where the body feels tender, strained or uncomfortable.
Main benefits
- Wound Healing & Anti-Infection
- Promotes the natural healing process for minor cuts, abrasions, ulcers, and superficial burns.
- Possesses natural antimicrobial and antiseptic properties that clean wounds and help prevent secondary skin infections.
- Relief for Sprains, Strains, & Bruises
- Acts as a potent anti-inflammatory agent, significantly reducing localised swelling, redness, and fluid accumulation.
- Helps disperse stagnant blood under the skin to fade bruises and discolouration faster.
- Joint & Muscle Pain Relief
- Provides analgesic (pain-relieving) action for conditions like back pain, tennis elbow, shoulder pain, and general arthritic discomfort.
- Eases muscle spasms, stiffness, and joint rigidity, helping restore flexibility and range of motion.
- Support in Fractures & Dislocations
- Frequently used in Ayurvedic therapies (Pichu, local bandages) as an adjunct treatment for bone fractures, dislocations, and soft-tissue or ligament injuries to soothe surrounding tissues and reduce post-trauma pain.
Key ingredients and their actions
- Karanja: Indian beech is traditionally used in Ayurvedic external preparations and contributes to Murivenna Thailam’s characteristic herbal action.
- Kumari: Aloe vera is valued for its naturally cooling, soothing and skin-conditioning qualities, making it particularly appropriate in an oil intended for tender or stressed areas.
- Shigru: Moringa leaves are widely used in Ayurveda and are traditionally included in external preparations for muscles, joints and soft tissues.
- Paribhadra: Indian coral tree leaves form part of the classical Murivenna formulation and are traditionally used in Ayurvedic external applications.
- Palandu: Onion bulb is included as a fresh herbal juice and contributes to the traditional character of the formulation.
- Vasuka: This traditional Ayurvedic plant is incorporated as a fresh juice in the preparation of Murivenna Thailam.
- Thamboola: Betel leaf is an aromatic botanical ingredient traditionally used in a variety of Ayurvedic external preparations.
- Shatavari: Shatavari rhizome is incorporated as an herbal paste and contributes nourishing and soothing qualities to the formulation.
- Kera Thaila: Coconut oil provides the principal oil base. It spreads easily over the skin and gives Murivenna its naturally cooling and conditioning character.
- Thandula Jala: Rice water forms part of the traditional liquid medium used during preparation of the medicated oil.
How to use
- Apply a suitable quantity of Murivenna Thailam gently over the area requiring attention, or use as directed by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare professional.
- For ordinary localised body care, spread a small amount over the skin using gentle movements.
- Where the area has recently been strained, bruised or injured, avoid vigorous or deep massage.
- The oil may be gently warmed to approximately body temperature before application if desired.
- Always test the temperature carefully before applying it to the skin.
- Where Murivenna Thailam is being used following a significant injury, fracture, dislocation or on damaged skin, follow the advice of an appropriate healthcare professional.
- Fractures and dislocations require proper medical assessment and treatment; Murivenna Thailam should only be considered supportive traditional external care.
