For spiritual rituals, home remedies, aromatherapy and household use
Natural Camphor Crystals, known as Kapur or Bhimsaini Kapur in Ayurveda, have various uses and are a staple in spiritual rituals and in home remedies.
Unlike cheap synthetic camphor, which is derived from turpentine or petroleum and leaves behind a black residue when burned, Natural Camphor Crystals (Bhimseni Kapur) are extracted directly from the Cinnamomum camphora tree.
Natural Camphor Crystals (Bhimseni Kapur) comprise of irregular, crystalline chunks or flakes rather than perfectly uniform, machine-pressed tablets.
1. Therapeutic & Health benefit
- Respiratory relief: Camphor is a primary ingredient in products such as Vicks VapoRub. Inhaling the vapour or applying a camphor-based oil rub to the chest can help clear nasal congestion and soothe a cough.
- Pain & itch relief: When applied topically (in low concentrations using a base-oil, such as coconut or sesame oil), camphor stimulates nerve endings that receive cold and warm signals. This creates a “relief” from pain and itching, making it effective for muscle aches, joint pain, and minor skin irritations.
- Anti-fungal & Antibacterial: Research suggests camphor has antimicrobial properties, which is why it is sometimes found in treatments for nail fungus or minor skin infections.
- Ayurvedic “cooling” effect: In Ayurveda, medicinal-grade natural camphor is considered a coolant that balances Kapha and Pitta. It is traditionally prescribed by Ayurvedic practitioners in very minute quantities to support digestion and heart health.
2. Household & Aromatherapy uses
- Natural insect repellent: Warming camphor crystals or leaving a few in a bowl of water can effectively repel mosquitoes, flies, and moths.
- Air Purification: Many use camphor in diffusers to “cleanse” the air. It has a sharp, invigorating scent that enhances mental clarity and reduces stress.
- Deodouriser: Placing camphor crystals in closets or gym bags helps eliminate musty odours and prevents mould/mildew growth.
3. Spiritual & Ritual use
- Puja: In the Vedic tradition, burning camphor purifies the atmosphere of negative influences. It symbolises the energy of Lord Shiva and as the camphor melts away, so does the individual ego.
- Unlike synthetic camphor, which gives produces dark smoke when heated, natural camphor burns cleanly without leaving a residue.
Safety warning
Despite its benefits, camphor can be toxic if misused.
- Do not ingest, unless recommended by a qualified practitioner: Most camphor tablets sold for “Puja” or “Rituals” are synthetic and highly toxic if swallowed. Only specific “Natural Camphor” (like Bhimsaini) is used theraputically and, even then, only in microscopic amounts. Always keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Avoid applying on broken skin: Do not apply camphor oils to open wounds or burnt skin.
- Flammability: Camphor is highly flammable. Never heat a camphor-containing ointment (like VapoRub) in a microwave or on a stove, as it can explode or cause severe burns.
Quick usage guide
- Nasal & Chest congestion: Add a small quantity to a bowl of hot water and inhale steam (keep eyes closed).
- Muscle pain: Mix with coconut oil for a soothing massage oil (about 1 teaspoon of crushed camphor crystals per 1/2 cup of oil). Use a carrier oil such as Coconut oil (cooling for inflammation) or Sesame oil (warming for joint stiffness).
- Warm the carrier oil (do not boil).
- Stir in the crushed crystals; they should dissolve quickly in the warm oil.
- Once cooled to luke warm, massage the oil into the affected muscle or joint. You will feel a “cold-hot” sensation that relieves the nerves from pain.
- Mosquitoes, Moths etc: Place crystals in a bowl of water in the corner of a room to repel insects.
- Freshness of wardrobes, draws & cupboards: Wrap some crystals in a muslin cloth and place it among clothing, sheets and blankets.
