Drink water from a pure copper cup for balance and purification
In Ayurveda, water stored overnight in a pure copper cup, is known as Tamara Jal and, in the Indian health tradition, such water is routinely drunk first thing in the morning.
This practice is highly regarded, not only because the water tastes good but it is said to have a purifying effect on the whole physiology. As well as having a specific balancing influence on Pitta dosha, it helps balance all the three Doshas in your body: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Trace amounts of copper leach into the water through an oligodynamic process, offering various health benefits.
Main benefits
- Supports Digestive Health: Copper helps stimulate peristalsis (the contraction and relaxation of the digestive tract), reduces inflammation in the stomach lining, and assists in purging toxins (known in Ayurveda as Ama).
- Antimicrobial & Antibacterial Properties: Copper has a natural sterilising effect. Storing water in a copper cup supports the elimination of harmful bacteria, such as E. coli and S. aureus, making the water cleaner.
- Immune System Support: Copper is an essential trace mineral required for cell production, iron absorption, and overall immune function.
- Antioxidant & Cellular Health: It plays a role in neutralising free radicals, supporting skin health by aiding collagen synthesis, and assisting in cell regeneration.
- Balances the Doshas: According to Ayurvedic principles, copper-infused water gently stimulates the liver and spleen, helping maintain overall elemental balance in the body: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
- Made from High-Copper-Content Metal: These copper cups consists of 99.5% copper with 0.5% zinc and allows plain water to come into direct contact with its natural copper surface.
- Simple to Incorporate into a Morning Routine: Fill the cup with fresh, plain drinking water in the evening, leave it at room temperature overnight and drink the water the next morning.
Best practices for use
- Fill and Rest: Fill the copper cup with fresh water at room temperature and let it sit for 6 to 8 hours (ideally overnight).
- Optimal Consumption: Drink the water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
- Purity Only: Only store pure water in the copper vessel. Do not use it for acidic liquids (like lemon water, fruit juices, or tea) or hot water, as acids react strongly with copper and can lead to copper toxicity.
- Take Periodic Breaks: Drink Tamra Jal daily for up to 3 months, then take a break for a few weeks to allow your body to naturally balance its mineral levels.
Care and maintenance
Pure copper oxidises naturally over time when exposed to air and moisture, developing a dark patina or spots. To clean your copper cup safely without harsh chemicals:
- Mix equal parts lemon juice (or tamarind paste) and salt.
- Gently rub the mixture over the interior and exterior using a soft cloth.
- Rinse thoroughly with plain water and dry completely with a clean towel to prevent water spots.
- Avoid using abrasive scrubbers or washing in a dishwasher.
Container capacity
- Approximately 250ml
Important use and care information
- Use the cup only for plain, still drinking water.
- Do not use it for lemon water, fruit juice, fizzy drinks, alcohol, milk or other acidic beverages, as these can substantially increase copper leaching.
- Do not use the cup if green or blue-green corrosion is present. Clean it thoroughly before further use.
- Wash before first use and rinse after every use. Dry completely before storage.
- Natural darkening and patination are normal characteristics of unlined copper.
- People with Wilson’s disease or another disorder affecting copper metabolism should not use copper drinking vessels without medical advice.
